Knock knock. Who’s there?
30 friends and supporters of Climate Action Newtown!
It’s no joke. On Saturday 17th July, CAN and its friends and supporters are going to fan out and knock on doors across Newtown. We’ll engage with members of the local area, completing surveys with residents on renewable energy and climate change, as a way of starting a community conversation and ensuring that climate change is back on the agenda in the lead up to the federal election.
That won’t be easy. But it can be done, with your help!
We’re calling for 30 of our friends and supporters to come with us, to help us reach 3000 households across Newtown. We’re getting close to that number – in fact 22 of you have already confirmed your attendance – so if you haven’t already done so, please RSVP to Lydia at climate.action.newtown@gmail.com.
At our first doorknocking afternoon, I was anxious that it would be quite confronting to talk to people in this way, but I needn’t have worried – door after door yielded friendly and concerned citizens, with overwhelming support for what we were doing. Our survey that day found that 85% of residents thought the government was not doing enough to tackle climate change, and 92% of people thought Australia should develop a plan to move to 100% renewable energy!
CAN have run a few doorknocking sessions now, and we’ve been putting climate change back on the agenda, one household at a time. Following this weekend, we’ll be compiling the survey results, taking them to local member Anthony Albanese and asking him to respond to what people have said. We’ll then report his comments back to the people we’ve doorknocked. This is such a powerful way in which we can make sure our leaders are held accountable on climate change in an election year.
Training and equipment will be provided on the day, so all you have to bring is yourself, and in order to get as many people along as possible we’re asking you to invite a friend who you know who be interested in making a difference on climate this election. Afterwards, we’ll head to the pub for a drink and a debrief.
When: Saturday 17th July, 1.30pm – 5pm.
Where: meet at the Newtown Neighbourhood Centre, opposite Newtown train station. Follow the signs.
What to bring: water, snacks and a camera with video mode (so we can record what people are saying at the door).
RSVP: email Lydia at climate.action.newtown@gmail.com
If you’re still not convinced, check out this 2 minute video from Climate Action Moreland, one of our sister groups down in Melbourne. They’ve been having lots of fun!
Looking forward to hitting the streets with you on the 17th!
