About CAN
Climate Action Newtown is a local community organisation based in Newtown, NSW.
Our goal is to educate and activate the local community about the climate crisis we are facing – and the solutions that exist now. We believe Australia needs to take urgent steps to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and transition our economy to a low carbon future based on 100% renewable energy.
Our members are local residents from the inner-west of Sydney. We have strong links with other groups in our community including environmental organisations, local student organisations, and bicycle groups. All members of Climate Action Newtown are volunteers and the group is politically unaligned.
Member profiles
Every month we’ll be getting to know a member of CAN. This month, meet Tom.
Likes: the planet (what’s left of it), the sea (I think I was a pirate in a past life), riff raff radical marching band, my new found love of percussion, my bike that I bought from a police auction of unclaimed goods for $60, any social outing (from an AC/DC concert to Addison Rd markets), watching Moira dance badly and sing loudly at karaoke (now that’s gold), filling in personal profiles on websites.
Dislikes: climate change deniers, the billionaire bullies (or any mining magnate), poor public transport (especially the 370; what is it with that bus), handing out how to vote cards and the voter says “no thanks, I’m right” why can’t they say “no thanks, I’m left”, filling in personal profiles on websites (had you going for a minute there).
What do you do?
Part time PhD student in fish ecology, part time environmental campaigner, soon to be rock god.
How long have you been with CAN?
Since some time in 2008 (I think; all this heat from global warming is making me dizzy).
Why do you like being part of CAN?
Love the people and the energy (it’s so renewing) and I would feel too guilty if I was doing nothing on climate change.
Did you have a climate epiphany or a slow realisation? (what made you get active?)
It all started with the Kevin 07 election and stupidly thinking we would finally see some action. So when nothing changed I decided I had to get active and be a new source of energy to the cause (oh yeah, another pun; I’m on fire!).
CAN’s objectives
Climate Action Newtown has three primary objectives:
- To increase community awareness on the threat of climate change as well as its solutions, and to provide means for the local community to take action
- To put pressure on political leaders to pursue climate solutions through a range of methods including letter and submission writing, lobbying, protest, events and movement building
- To help build the community based climate movement through working with the wider network of climate action groups
